A Wassailing we will go!

Wassailing?  How does one “wassail?”  In areas west of Europe, wassailing refers to drinking and singing to the health of trees to help them thrive.  The house-visiting wassail is the practice of people going door-to-door, singing and offering a drink from the wassail bowl in exchange for gifts; this practice still exists, but has largely been displaced by caroling.

We have the pleasure of working with Sam and Di at Rocky Mountain Wassail.  They have a great wassail that you can find at Ouray Glassworks or locations across the country.  For the kids (and young at heart), wassail is a mulled cider that can be enjoyed at any time.  A warm mug of cider as you watch the leaves or snowfall will warm your toes and your heart.  Add a couple teaspoons to a cup of green or black tea made with steamed milk.  Adults will enjoy adding a few teaspoons to a hearty red wine and heating through.

While at Sweetheart Winery in Loveland, we ran into Yvonne and Nicole who were looking to purchase some Rocky Mountain Wassail and were kind enough to let us get a picture.  They love the wassail!

Grills Up, America!

Hey, it’s Tom.  After a three week spring season here in Colorado, summer has roared in with blazing heat.  Across the country, people are pulling out the charcoal grills, gas grills, smokers, and camp stoves. One thing I love about the diehard grillers and smokers is they will brush six inches of snow off their smoker at 3:00 a.m. to get a pork butt on for lunch, and grilling in the summer almost seems too easy (except for battling the mosquitos).

A great part of my job is working with people to get their rubs and seasonings to market.  Whether we’re helping Colorado Smokin’ Butts get their delicious rubs to the retail market or working with a local chain to standardize their product across all locations, it’s a delicious job to have!  Recently, we worked with our friends Mitch & Chris Hoyt from Skinny Sticks Pure Maple Syrup on a maple sugar rub.  Oh my!  The incredible aromas and flavors we created!

Our R&D team reaches beyond the walls of our facility.  Our friend Ryan Schleisman (Elevation Medical in Fort Collins) is always willing to do a pork butt on the Big Green Egg with one of these blends and report back.  What a team player!  I wonder if he would do a pizza on the Egg if we brought some Custom Blending Pizza Sauce seasoning and Uncle Bemis Hot Italian Sausage over...

If you’re so inclined, pick up some of our Uncle Bemis Bratwurst seasoning at Scheels in Johnstown, CO and grind your own brats.  You don’t have to put them in casings – just patty out the ground brat and grill it like a burger.  Serve on a pretzel bun with a spicy mustard. Yummy.

AutoZone has a slogan, “Hood’s Up America.”  I say, “Grills Up America!”  Food always brings people together.  Pull your grill, smoker, camp stove, or fire pit, to the driveway, get out the cornhole game, turn up some summertime tunes, invite the neighbors, cook some great food, and enjoy life.
